VINTAGE WOODEN CRATES........

Hope you are all enjoying a relaxing week between Christmas and New Year's.  Here's something totally off the topic of holidays....I needed a change....hope you enjoy!

Antique or vintage wooden crates are such an interesting decor item.  Houzz recently showed many of these used as shelving units and then I found a bunch on Pinterest as well.

I picked up a couple of these crates at an antique store in the summer.
I decided to display mine in Woodhaven's kitchen.  There is a shelf over the sink that is perfect for them.  I hope to add to my collection in the future, it looks a little lonely up there.

I put the other one on the other side of the kitchen, definitely need a couple more to round out the display.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! HOPE THIS YEAR BRINGS LOTS OF LOVE, HEALTH and HAPPINESS!

A FEW CHRISTMAS IDEAS AND A PILLOW.....

In case you are looking for some last minute gift ideas for the design obsessed, here's a couple of items I'm asking for this Christmas.
I always love getting books, especially new design books, so here's the ones that made it to my short list this year.

I've been seeing alot of my fellow bloggers posting about some of these design books and after checking them out at Chapters, I added them to my "I want, pretty please" list.

First up -

I loved all the cool DIY's and inspiration in here.
Next up,

Unfortunately Chapters didn't have this one in stock for me to look over, but after reading Nancy's review over at Marcus Design, I'm adding it to my list too!  Click here to read it.

I also found this one, which had such beautiful images and well, since I'm a sucker for soft, pale rooms, it got added to my list as well.
So that's my three for this year, ok hunny, you got it?

On another reading note, I was all cozied up in bed, reading the December issue of House and Home and when I got to this page, I let out a little squeal.

Now pay attention to the pillow on the bottom right and check out my pillow I just made for Woodhaven.

                                                                                                       Lisa Goulet Design
Is that not the darnest thing?  I know it isn't the same colour, but how funny is that.  Love the fabric, it's called Bodega from Tonic Living. I used it to reupholster an old chair and made this pillow to go with it.  I'll be posting all about it soon.

I would like to thank you all for visiting my blog and for the many lovely comments and connections throughout the year.  I so love reading them all and wanted you to know how much I appreciate each and everyone of you.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the joy the season can hold!
Enjoy your families and God Bless!

ICONIC MONDAYS.. HISTORY OF HOLIDAY EVERGREENS.....

For the Christmas season, I thought it would be appropriate to post about the history of decorating with evergreen boughs and branches, as it's become iconic decorating.

Source: bhg.com via Lisa on Pinterest

This tradition started with ancient man, who believed that by decorating bushes in winter time, it would attract the spirits, who they believed had fled the harsh weather.  History is not too sure, what they decorated with, maybe bits of coloured cloth or stones.

Later, branches were brought into their homes as shelter for the spirits of nature, who would spend the winter inside. Then, they would release them in the early Spring when the first buds began to appear.  The theory was, if they were not brought back outside at that time, the spirits would reek havoc in your home.

So, this created two customs that we still follow -
1. Bringing evergreens into the house at Christmastime;
2. The superstition that all decorations must be taken down by Christmas's end (originally, Feb 2nd) or bad luck will ensue.

So, now you know why we decorate with evergreens during the Christmas season.

Have a wonderful Christmas!
Iconic Mondays will be back on January 2, 2012.

HOLIDAY DECOR..............

Here's some random pictures of my holiday decor.
This is my tv console that I always add some Christmas sparkle to.

Some pictures of my kitchen & family room holiday decor.  I love these little faux evergreens.

More pictures of the family room and the mantel which I posted about last week.
The dining room, I can't show you the table as it's full of some sewing projects I have on the go....
And the living room, since I was so far behind in my decorating this year I didn't decorate my entire staircase, but settled for just doing the two posts at the bottom.  I think it's still pretty, but simplified.

And finally, the tree and some close ups of these adorable chandelier ornaments that I picked up in Niagara on the Lake this summer.  The glass teardrop is another favourite that I found at the Third World Bazaar (held in Manotick every fall) and the clear glass ornament with the tree is from New York City, specifically the Rockefeller Center, of course.

Can you tell that I've been playing with the My Memories software ;-)

I'm linking this up to the Blogosphere Holiday Link up Party, so click on the button below to check out the other great posts.

And don't forget today is the last day to enter my Wayfair giveaway.  Check it out here.
