ICONIC MONDAYS....THE MARAIS CHAIR

Today's Iconic Monday post is all about the Marais Chair!

In 1934, metalworker Xavier Pauchard created the Marais A Chair for Tolix. It was the quintessential cafe chair that was both elegant and sturdy enough to grace the decks of the S.S. Normandie ocean liner.

Each chair is made by hand and thus no two of these chairs are identical.  The x-shaped reinforcement bar under the seat bears the designer's initial.

All of Tolix metal furniture is still made in Autun, France, where it all originated.  Slight marking and abrasions are characteristics of the material and part of the machine aesthetic.  Rubber feet are added to prevent damage to any floors.

This sturdy chair will stand up to all kinds of abuse and is stackable as well.

There are even stools now in the same design.

You can get them in colours other than gray and white.

Or an adorable child size one!

I'm loving this chair, and the fact that it is made in France, well that just ups the ante for me!  How about you?

  1. I LOVE this chair. Our local movie theatre with all it's gaudy carpet and decor have these chairs in their food court - I am tempted to ask them if they would sell them to me for a steal!

I love your iconic chair round-ups!

  2. I love this chair, and especially the story behind it. I think it's very cool that no two chairs are exactly alike!
